Welcome to Lowther

Lowther is the name of a river, a village, a family, an estate and one of England’s oldest dynasties. Proudly today, the family remains where it first arrived from Denmark, around 1000 years ago. And equally proudly, the estate – as it has since the late 12th century – continues to shift and bend with the times.

Farming, forestry, property and events are the mainstay of the Lowther Estate today, and from here we operate three UK-wide land-based businesses employing 150 people. Since 2010, we have been in partnership with a charity to open Lowther Castle and Gardens to the public – it is now a fascinating hub of history and horticulture.
